1. Pass through the time.

The annals of the people of the Antique pullulate with detailed narratives that show the deep knowledge that the ancient clergymen had about the magnetism.

The magicians of Chaldea, the Brahmans in India have healed through the glance.

Still today, in Asia, the fakirs cultivate with success the magnetic practices.

The Egyptians used, in the relief of the sufferings, the passes and the laying on of hands, as we still executed them today.

The Romans also had temples where the health was reconstituted by magnetic operations.

In Gaul, the druids possessed in high degree the faculty of healing, as many historians attest; their magnetic medicine became so celebrated that people of all the parts of the world came to consult them.

In the middle Ages, mainly the sages practiced the magnetism.

"Avicena, famous doctor, that lived from 980 to 1036, wrote that the soul acts not only on the body, or else still on strange bodies that it can influence at the distance".

The Christians of the Antique diffused with a lot of frequency the magnetic practices, mainly through Christ’s hands, when made cures in His evangelical pilgrimage through the Palestine. Thereof, we have several examples related in the New Testament.

1.2. Some references in the New Testament:

  • A leper’s healing, Matthew 8, 1:4;
  • A Centurion’s servant’s healing, Matthew 8, 5:13;
  • Peter’s mother–in–law healing, Matthew 8, 14:15;
  • A paralytic’s healing in Capernaum, Matthew 9, 1: 8;
  • The ten lepers, Luke 17, 11:19;
  • The paralytic of the pool, John 5, 1:17;
  • The woman who have suffered of hemorrhoids for twelve years, Mark 5, 25:34;
  • Peter and John, Acts 3, 1:11;
  • Ananias, Acts 9, 10:17.

We found in these references, the pass as habitual practice of healing at Jesus’ time and of His followers, when the hands appear as one of the vehicles more common of technique of healing through fluid therapy, besides the origin of the term "endowment of healing" by the apostle Paul.

With the Spiritism the magnetic practice reappear with more frequency, through the usage of the pass. Two guidelines appeared with the new science: one scientific guideline (Mesmer) and other scientific and religious guideline (Kardec).

1.3. Magnetism.

The animal magnetism, also known as mesmerism, considering that have been Franz Anton Mesmer, who has been doctor by the University of Vienna, its more celebrated renovator in the modern times, when it was in vogue in the ends of the eighteenth century, acquiring larger impulse in the first half of the nineteenth century.

In France, above all, medical summits, illustrious prelates confirmed the truthfulness of the magnetic phenomena, mainly in what it tells respect the psychic cures, at diagnostics and therapeutic prescriptions furnished by the sleepwalkers.

To own Pestalozzi the reports of extraordinary cures, which were gotten by magnetizers, through the "passes", would not have past unheeded.

The Kardec’s initiation, which had his curiosity awakened for the animal magnetism, as soon as arrived at Paris, it happened approximately in 1823, according him affirmed. And in the following years it would apply part of his time in the solid and balanced, and theoretical and practical study about the magnetism, acquiring like this, solids knowledge of this science.

Magnetism is in fact a used word in a wrong way for a therapy form, that now it is indicated with a more scientific definition: Medicine of bioenergetics or energetic therapy. The great advantage of the energetic therapy is that it can be applied anywhere, directly, without intermediary factors. If we abide by the guidelines, the method won’t present the smallest danger, nor it’ll provoke harmful collateral reactions...

When two minds harmonize themselves, a mind passively and other mind actively, it settles down between both, a mental stream whose effect is of molding conditions for which the active mind exercises influence on the passive mind. To that phenomenon we denominated magnetization.

Thus, magnetism is the process for which the man, emitting energy of his perispirit acts on other man, as well as on all the animated or inanimate bodies.

1.4. Forerunners of the Pass in Brazil.

Around 1840, two humanitarian doctors arrived in Brazil. They were Bento Mure and Vicente Martins that would do of the homeopathic medicine true apostolate. A lot before the Kardec’s Codification, both knew the mediumistic trances and the elevated reach of the application of the spiritual magnetism.

They were the homeopaths that here introduced the magnetic passes, as immediate aid of the healings.

2. Definitions and Concepts.

And besought Him greatly, saying, my little daughter is at the point of death: I beseech thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed and she shall live. Mark 5, 23.

Jesus imposed His hands over the sick and transmitted health to them. His loving power knew the slightest imbalances of Nature and the resources to restore the indispensable harmony to it.

None of the Divine Master’s acts is destitute of significance. Recognizing this truth the apostles began to lay their fraternal hands in the name of the Lord and they became instruments of Divine Mercy.

Now, in revived Christianity, we once again benefit from a rescue effort from the Invisible Plane through passes. The administration of passes as psychic transfusions of energy represents a continuation of the Master’s work to alleviate the sufferings in the world. This is how precious spiritual precious energies flow from Christ’s Messengers to donors and beneficiaries.

It would be audacity on the part of the new disciples the expectation of results as sublime as obtained by Jesus when He healed the disabled, disturb or dying people.

The Master knows, while we are merely learning. It is necessary, however, not to despise His lesson, continuing for our time the love work through use of fraternal hands.

Jesus’ providential service can be extended wherever there may be a sincere mental disposition for the good.

The external method is not important. It is up to us to recognize that good can and should be done in His name.

2.2.

The mediumship is sacred thing that should be practiced with saintliness and religiously. If there is a genus of mediumship, which still requires that way condition more absolute, is the healer mediumship. (Allan Kardec).

It is unequivocal the seriousness with that Kardec has posted himself before the healer mediumship. So much as soon as he refers to it as a sacred thing, clearly emphasizing the nobility of character of the which should overlay themselves anyone who is disposed to that true divine labor, in order to act, in every the moments, that should be practiced with saintliness and religiously.

But, noble character is acquired graduation in the manners and daily habits and not just in certain moments almost always lived in the way sporadic of immediate, interested or selfish motive.

We can initially analyze, some aspects that say respect to the definitions and mentions that ahead we’ll be appreciating. That because it was not usually under the name it passes, but, generally, as endowment of healing, as healing mediumship, as laying on of hands that the Codifier mentioned to the matter in study. Moreover in several occasions he treated of this theme that generally he denominated it of magnetism, although in those opportunities he couldn’t leave doubts in that type of magnetism he referred.

The designation of healing mediumship given by Kardec it is the genus of mediumship that mainly consists in the endowment, who certain people possess, of to heal by the simple touch, by the glance, even by a gesture, without the use of any medication, it’s already perceived the expansion with that he treated the matter.

Another quite common verification is that if we analyze encyclopedias and dictionaries, we will notice that nor all the existent references are in relation to the pass (in the singular), which is the used manner usually in the Spiritist midst and in the spiritualistic literature in general, but specially to the passes (in the plural).

It still matters to consider that the term pass has distinct meanings. Initially the pass was only the name given to the gesture (or to the group of these) with aims of moving effluviums. After it became known like cure activity, it generalized itself as the own practice of the cure. In the Spiritist understanding some times it is evoked with one, some times with other sense. In spite of that, in the manner as it has came to use the term pass so much it can be understood as a Spiritist therapy, as a part of the magnetism, as a cure technique or still as the generic sense of the fluid therapy.

3. Notions.

The spiritist pass is a transfusion of psychic and spiritual energies that alter the cellular field. It is not a technique. It is a love act. It was not invented by the Spiritism, but it was studied by it. Jesus has utilized it.

In the Spiritist literature, other concepts exist, such as:

  • It is a transfusion of psychic energies... (Emmanuel, The Consoler, question 99);
  • It is a transfusion of regenerative energies... (Marco Prisco. Spiritist Summary);
  • It is not only transfusion of psychic energies. It is the equilibrium ideal of the mind, effective support of all the treatments. (Andre Luiz. Spiritist Opinion.);
  • The pass is transfusion of physiopsychic energies, operation willingly, inside of which the companion of the good gives in of himself in your benefit. (Emmanuel, Follow me, Chapter: The Pass).

When two minds attune themselves, one mind is passively acting and other mind is actively acting, it settle down among both a mental current whose effect is of to mold conditions for which the active mind exert influence on the passive mind. To that phenomenon we denominate magnetization. So, magnetism is the process for which the man acts, emitting energy of his perispirit (spiritual body) on other man as well as on all the animate or inanimate bodies. We have wherefore which the pass is a transfusion of energy from pass giver and/or spirit to the patient.

Pass is the transference of psychic and spiritual energies. There are people that store energies, which emanate from the Universal Cosmic Fluid what, put them in conditions of to transfuse these energies to who is needy.

The energies transmitted by the pass are magnetic forces of varied purport. They can be gathered from the reigns of Nature: the mineral, the vegetable, the animal, the human and of fluids from the spiritual world.

The finality is the revitalization and perispiritual, psychic and organic balance; reestablishment of the neural-vegetative system; assistance and support.

The pass giver projects streams of fine and powerful fluids, that act inducing transformations on the cellular groupings, be in the dense body, and be in the Perispirit.

The pass is always, according to the spiritist vision, a procedure magnetic fluid, which has as principal auxiliary objective the restoration of the patient’s organic balance. For organic, in this case, must be understood the individual’s complete structure — physical body, perispirit and Spirit.

4. Objectives of the pass.

The pass has been included in the practices of the Spiritism as auxiliary of the ordinary therapeutic resources. It is, therefore, a mean and not the purpose of the Spiritism. However, a lot of people look after the Spiritist Center in search only of healing or improvement of their physical or psychological sickness and, as they say, spiritual disturbances.

Usually, the people that proceed in this manner are our brethren that ignore the fundamentals of the Spiritism. Many people see in the Spiritism one more religion, was created by Kardec. Other people only associate it to the mediumship, fearing its practice, which would involve the relationship with the souls of the other world. Still others associate it to the cures, and even to the mystic formulas for the solution of financial, matrimonial problems etc.

There are those that without anything to know frequently take passes, for habit, even without needing. All that results of the doctrinaire ignorance; of personal interpretations of dissemination; of erroneous concepts. It is to owe of the spiritist center, through its workers, to elucidate those who seek them concerning the larger objectives of the Spiritism that gravitate around of the deliverance of the creatures of the moorings of the ignorance of the divine laws, lifting them to the perfection.

Oftentimes, the faith that induces the people to look for the resources of the pass is blind. They ignore its mechanisms, its effects and its application. The blind faith is mystic. The true faith is an attractive and restorative force of the beneficial energies.

In order to understand the mechanisms of the pass, it’s important we must study its objectives, the conditions of applications, the pass giver’s behavior, the structure of the spiritist center and, not less and perhaps more important the fluids and its laws, what includes the analysis of the perispirit, its functions and its properties. All this is exposed on Allan Kardec’s basic works, especially in the chapter 14 of Genesis, as well as in other serious works, as Andre Luiz’s works, Leon Denis’s works, Yvonne Pereira’s works, Philomeno de Miranda’s works, Jacob Melo’s works, Luiz Gurgel’s works among others.

4.1. We distinguished the objectives of the pass in three groups:

  1. In relation to the patient;
  2. In relation to the pass giver;
  3. In relation to the spiritist center.

4.1.1. In relation to the patient.

The spiritist pass objectifies the patient’s organic (physical), psychic, perispiritual and spiritual balance. It reach to this conclusion through the observation that:

when a patient seeks the pass, he looks for, with certainty, improvement for his organic, psychic and spiritual behavior, what already represents an affirmative of that objective; when the mediums feel themselves donating energies and, per times, they weary themselves after the sessions of passes, they have let clear evidences that there were transfers of fluids in benefit of the patient; proving the improvement or healing of the patients, again the thesis is confirmed; in the study of the most varied treaties and works about the matter, there is not who disagree of that objective.

However it mustn’t confuse itself the objective of the pass with its reach. Erroneously it is common, to suppose of the fact of somebody has not been cured in a certain fluid-therapy treatment, and this lets of having its defined objectivity. Such reasoning would equalize to condemning the Medicine taking as base the cases that didn’t have possible solution, or to accuse a doctor if a patient doesn’t react to certain medicines. The pass, like medicines, has its well-defined objectives, though, for circumstances that will be seen further on, nor always they are reached satisfactorily. That however doesn’t distinguish them.

Emmanuel spirit thus pronounce himself: "If you need similar intervention (of the pass), you’ll preserve yourself to the good will, centralize the your expectation in the celestial fountains of the divine supply, humiliate yourself, conserving the edifying receptivity, inflame your heart in the positive trust and, remembering that somebody will assume responsibility with the heaviness of your afflictions, rectify your road, considering Jesus’ incessant sacrifice equally for us all, because, of conformity with the sacred letters, ’He took on himself our diseases and he took our illnesses’." (Original emphasis.)

Here we found an entire objectivity definition, a true manual of orientation to who will benefit of the profits of a pass.

It is the moral and spiritual part of the pass in prominence, inviting the patient to the humbleness.

4.1.2. In relation to the Pass Giver.

Let us remind Kardec when it informs us that " the faculty of curing for the imposition of the hands derives, evidently of an exceptional force of expansion, but several causes concur to increase it, among which are of placing, in the first line: the purity of the feelings, the detachment, the benevolence, the zealous desire to provide relief, the feverous prayer and the trust in God; in a word... all the moral qualities" or in other words: beyond providing the cure or the patient’s improvement, the Pass Giver owes he to make an effort for improving morally, in the aim of accomplishing your task worthily and of best to favor to the objectives of the pass.

As mediums, we should be conscious that we have in the pass a sacred opportunity to practice the charity without mixtures, since we could be imbued of the true Christian spirit, without speaking in the blessing of we could be in company of good Spirits that, with love, diligence, love, understanding and humility are still used of our limited energy potentialities in benefit of the neighbor and of ourselves.

Furthermore, we do not forget that we are, in majority, beginners in the journey of the evolution, for the that is worth the warning of Emmanuel remembering that "would be audacity on the part of the new disciples the expectation of results as sublime as obtained by Jesus close to the paralytics, disturbed and dying. The Master knows, while we other are learning how to know. It’s necessary, however, not to despise him the lesson, continuing, for our time, the love work, through the fraternal hands".

By the fact of donation of the pass to be simple, we do not ought donate the pass at random, nor either in order to "to give serious appearances" to them, nurturing erroneous ideas that induce to the mysticism or that come to create mysteries to his respect. For that reason Andre Luiz invites us... "Spiritists and spiritist mediums, we may cultivate the pass in the vehicle of the prayer, with the respect that is due to one of the most legitimate complements of the usual therapeutics", inducing us, like this, to the responsibility that we should have as spiritist pass giver mediums.

For practicing such function the pass giver will ought be in perfect physical and moral balance.

There are therefore, some basic requirements, according to Andre Luiz that are:

  1. Doctrinal knowledge and balanced behavior;
  2. Good mental and physical health;
  3. Emotional balance;
  4. Control over thoughts and feelings. He must also love for his neighbors, have a good understanding of life and an unshakable faith;
  5. Desire for inner reform;
  6. Exercise self-control;
  7. Faith and deep trust in Divine power.

But apart from these requirements above, there are impediments that must be avoided by the pass giver:

  1. Emotional imbalance;
  2. Excessive lamenting, hatred and anger;
  3. Passionate rage, short temper, discourtesy, envy, jealousy, vanity, pride and intolerance;
  4. Uneasiness, mental depression, loud laughter and hysterical crying for no significant reason;
  5. Lack of moderation, cursing, being ironic and intransigent;
  6. Bad habits such as: smoking, taking drugs, the use of alcohol, and deviation from correct behavior.

The moral battle against the vices and degrading passions may be started for all and especially by who desire to serve as a pass giver. The first step is in the combat to the addictions, winning them with persistence and tenacity.

The balance of the body is in direct relationship with the harmony of the spirit, without one the other doesn’t exist. The Law of Balance through the fluid energy maintains everything.

The pass giver, simultaneously with the study and the practice of the charity, will need surveillance in his action field, because of his spiritual hygiene will result the wholesome reflex in those to who intend to help.

4.1.3. In relation to the spiritist center.

The Spiritist Center cannot only use of its mediums for the services of the pass but equally to renew the knowledge of the same ones through studies, symposiums and trainings, seeking for to train conscious and responsible teams and exempting itself so of pernicious limitation of just having a "said" special medium, or, what is not less serious, to just count willingly with people bearers to the service but without any interest in studying, to learn or to recycle knowledge, limited, almost always, to the practices of the "I already make so much time that act like this" or "my mentor is who guides me and he doesn’t never fail".

At last, we already know which the time of practice, considerate separately, doesn’t grant respectability to the pass, as well as the task, on the individual field, is duty of the mediums and not of the mentors who exempt him of participation and responsibility.

Become conscious our pass givers of their big and not transferable responsibilities, because if in all activities of our lives we are directly and irreplaceable, responsible by our actions, what can we think those tied to ennobling task?

Others objectives of the pass:

  1. To comprehend, master and exercise adequate techniques in the transmission of fluids, based on simplicity, discretion and Christian ethics.
  2. To associate correctly the need for concentration, prayer and irradiation with the pass process and so, be better able to feel the transfusion of vital fluidic energies during the pass, thus making the transmission easier.
  3. To understand the necessity of a special ambient combined with special conditions for the atmosphere of that ambient, as well as favorable situation for the application of the pass.
  4. To rigorously observe moral, physical and spiritual necessities, combined with knowledge of the doctrine in order to be able to perform the act of giving pass with efficiency and seriousness at all times.
  5. To observe simplicity and correct form in which to apply the pass, avoiding rituals, strange attitudes and gestures. These gestures incorrectly applied lead to conditioning on the part of the pass giver and misinterpretation on the part of the patient.
  6. To recognize the need for and to exercise constant discipline during the pass without any ostensive display of mediumistic manifestation. Avoid counseling the patient during the pass, as well as being conscious of the fact that each application should be given in silence.
  7. To recognize that physical contact during the pass is improper. Contact may cause a negative reaction and be an embarrassment to the patient. It is totally unnecessary within the ethics and simplicity of the doctrine, since all fluid energy transmitted from the pass giver to the patient is by means of the aura and not by means of the epidermis. This has been proved through the use of the Kirlian photography, which clearly show the flow of energy from the pass giver to the patient without physical contact.
  8. To be aware that during the pass the medium should not rely solely on good faith, but rather should learn to depend on himself and his own efficiency.
  9. To understand the necessity of working with a minimum of three pass givers (as a team and not individually), in order to achieve and sustain the concentrated vibrations required. Every Spiritist Group or Center, should maintain regular Sessions of Pass. They should not be carried out at home except when following a "Gospel at Home" meeting, or in the case of an emergency due to physical illness. In the last case it is important to remember the absolute necessity for the team to prepare the ambient before commencing the passes through prayer and specified reading (e.g.: The Gospel According to Spiritism, or other spiritual message of an edificating and instructive nature).
  10. To know in which situation the pass would be beneficial, harmful or of no effect. Every Spiritist Center or Group should offer pass along with Gospel and doctrinal instruction, and inform the general public as to its collaboration with the pass giver in order receive full benefit from the pass. Passes should always be administered in a room designed solely as the Pass Sanctuary.
