1. Concept.

As the germ of a fruit is surrounded by the perisperm so the Spirit, properly so called, is surrounded by an envelope which, by analogy, may be designated as the perispirit. (A. Kardec) We say that without the perispirit we might not visualize the Spirit in its essence. The perispirit individualize it. It is verified, thus, the important paper that exercises the perispirit, accompanying the Spirit from its creation, as need, making possible to the same, manifestation elements and progress.

Speaking in an anthropological way, the perispirit is on the root, on the basis, of the formation all philosophical content of every religions, because it is through its intermediate that it has been possible to the Spirit to present itself, be through dreams, visions, tangible appearances or no, showing, since immemorial times, starting from the man’s existence. It is verified, then, along the civilizations, the diversity of denominations that it received. In Egypt is named "Ka", in Greece is named "Ochema", Pythagoras designated it "Eidolon", in India is named "Linga Sharira", and so on.

Modernly, Andre Luiz designated it "Psychosoma". In the world of the science, serious researchers, like Brazilians, Henrique Rodrigues and Hernani Guimaraes Andrade, denominate it, respectively, of Structuring Body of the form and Biological Organizing Model. In the extinct Soviet Union, serious scientists denominated it of Bioplasmatic Body, Energetic Body.

However, in respect to its intimate structure, the science walks to slow steps, almost stopping, hesitant, and apprehensive of watching the collapse of the several bastilles of the incomprehension, of the intolerance, of the temporal power, of the exploration of the faith.

Allan Kardec, in The Spirits’ Book, introduction, and 6th section, emphasizes the following: "There are in man three things:

  • 1st. the body, or material being, analogous to the animals, and animated by the same vital principle;
  • 2nd. The soul, or incarnated spirit, of which the body is the habitation;
  • 3rd. The intermediary principle, or perispirit; a semi-material substance, which constitutes the innermost envelope of the spirit, and unites the soul with the body. This triplicity is analogous to that of the fruit, which consists of the germ, the perisperm, and the rind or shell".

He is continuing, he tells us: "The link, or perispirit... is a sort of semi-material envelope... when the material body is destroyed, the Spirit preserves the perispirit, which constitutes for him an ethereal body".

  1. Spirits are constituted of spiritual substance, or spiritual element, as the bodies are constituted of material substance, or material element.
  2. The spirit is enveloped in a vaporous substance, which constitute his semi-material envelope. (The Spirits’ Book, question 93).
  3. This semi-material envelope, the Spirit draws from the universal cosmic fluid. (The Spirits’ Book, question 94).
  4. The nature of that envelope is semi-material, that is, of nature between the Spirit and the material body. (The Spirits’ Book, question 135).
  5. 5. The perispirit is the link, which unites the spirit with the material body. It is drawn from the surrounding atmosphere, from the universal cosmic fluid; it participates at once in the nature electricity, of the magnetic fluid, and of inert matter. It may be said to it the quintessence of matter… (The Spirits’ Book, question 257).
  6. The perispirit possesses some of the properties of matter. (The Mediums’ Book, First part, chapter I, item 3).
  7. We have said that, although of fluidic nature, it is none the less a species of matter; that this matter is eminently subtle, and that it has the property of passing alternately from a solid to a fluidic state, and vice-versa. (The Mediums’ Book, part second, chapter 1, item 57).
  8. The perispirit is a semi-material envelope; it belongs to the matter by its origins, and it belongs to the spirituality by its ethereal nature. Like all matter, it is drawn from the universal cosmic fluid. (Genesis, chapter 11, item 17).

Synthesizing, we will see that:

  1. The perispirit and material body have their source in the same fluidic element, one and other are matter, although from two different states. (Spiritist Magazine, ninth year, march 1866, 3rd volume).
  2. The spirits are enveloped in a vaporous substance, which constitute their semi-material envelope. (The Spirits’ Book, question. 93).
  3. Without SOUL, which is the intelligent principle, the perispirit as well as the material body, are inert matter, deprived of organic life and sensations. (Spiritist Magazine, ninth year, March 1866, 3rd volume).

Following these premises, we can conclude, with respect to the Origin and Nature of Perispirit, that:

  1. The perispirit being matter is inert, it doesn’t think.
  2. The sensations, the perceptions, the intelligence, the thought, they are not attributes of the perispirit, but of the Spirit.
  3. The idea of shape is inseparable of the idea of Spirit. There is no like to understand one without another. Thus, the perispirit is an integral part of the Spirit, bespeaking that in any degree of moral advancement in that the spirit gets, the spirit will always be surround of an envelope or perispirit.
  4. The perispirit constitutes the semi-material body of the Spirits, when they are in the spiritual world, and it serves like link, intermediary with the material body, when the spirit is incarnated.

With the observations that were commented in the precedent paragraph, Origin and Nature of the perispirit, we are commenting next the item: Properties of Perispirit that in synthesis, they are:

  1. Due its fluid nature, perispirit is flexible and expansible.
  2. It forms around the physical body, an atmosphere that the thought and the volition can dilate for more and for less.
  3. It absorbs and assimilates the fluid of the environment.
  4. It enables the Spirit to act over the matter, it constitute itself in the origin of all manifestations, like spiritual manifestations or animic manifestations.
  5. It is the intermediary in the process of transference of fluids, of energies, which is verified on the healing and on Spiritist pass.

In order to corroborate the conclusions that we arrived, it is important the analysis of the parts of Allan Kardec’s works, at following:

  1. Perispirit can assume any form that the spirit may choose to give to it. (The Spirits’ Book, question. 95).
  2. The soul is not shut up in the body like a bird in the cage. It radiates in all directions, and manifests itself outside the body as a light radiates from a glass globe. (The Spirits’ Book, question. 141).
  3. A spirit is not enclosed in his body as in a box, but radiates around it in every direction. (The Spirits’ Book, question. 420).
  4. Thought is one of the attributes of a spirit; the possibility of acting upon matter, of impressing the senses, and, as a natural consequence, of transmitting its thought, has its origin in the soul’s physiological constitution, if we may so express it; there is, then, in this alleged fact, nothing supernatural, nothing marvellous. (The Mediums’ Book, part first, chapter 2, item 7).
  5. The perispirit can vary and change indefinitely; the soul is thought, and its nature does not change. (The Mediums’ Book, part first, chapter 4, item 51).
  6. For its nature semi-material, the perispirit is flexible and expandable; and therefore, the form assumed by the perispirit, although similar to that of the body, is not absolutely the same. It yields to the will of the spirit, who can give it any similitude he pleases whereas the resistance of the solid envelope of flesh renders such changes of similitude impossible. Freed from the "vile body" which once compressed it, the perispirit spreads, contracts, or otherwise transforms itself; accomplishing every metamorphosis determined at the moment by the spirit’s will. (The Mediums’ Book, part second, chapter 1, item 56).
  7. On account of his ethereal nature, a spirit cannot act upon gross matter without an intermediary, that is to say, without the link, which unites spirit to matter; this link, which is what you call the perispirit, gives you the key to all the materialized spirit-phenomena. (The Mediums’ Book, part second, chapter 4, answer to the question 9 of the item 74).
  8. The perispirit is the foundation of all spirit-manifestations. (The Mediums’ Book, part second, chapter 6, item 109).
  9. The perispirit of incarnates, being of a nature identical to that of the spiritual fluids, assimilates itself whit them readily, as sponge absorbs water. (Genesis, chapter 14, item 18).
  10. Its action of fluids is transmitted from perispirit to the perispirit and of this to the material body. (Spiritist Magazine, seventh year, September 1865, 9th volume).

After the exam, study and analysis of the items Nature, Origin and Properties of Perispirit, in a brief way, let us see the functions of the perispirit, synthetically:

  • Organism that personalizes, that individualizes, and that identifies the Spirit.
  • Sensitive organ of the Spirit.
  • Beginning of the mediumistic communications.
  • Angular basis of the psychic and mediumistic phenomena.

With respect to the subject perispirit, the scientific proof dates from nineteenth century, with the memorable experiences of Zollner, and Crookes, and others already forgotten. With base in those same experiences, they were proven all practically of the basic beginnings of the Spiritist Doctrine, and countless were of character laboratorial, surrounded of all of the requirements and scientific rigidities.

In the twentieth century, century of lights, the objectivity of certain researches, initiate for "simple chances", they brought more knowledge and obviously they came to consolidate the proofs of what is already proven. And they came exactly from the materialistic scientists.

The researches that have been initiated for Semyon Kirlian and have continued by several scientists of ex USSR, have consolidated those proofs, already mentioned. It is important to observe that the researches have been initiated in 1939 and the result have reported to the scientific world in 1968.

It was noticed, experimentally:

  1. The existence of the Bioenergy. When announcing this verification, it found out that Bioenergy is:
    1. Responsible for all of the processes of the life;
    2. That all the physical, and chemical, and biological phenomena, suffer the interaction of the bioenergy;
    3. That the whole Universe is dipped in the bioenergy.

Doing a doctrinal correlation, we will see:

That Kardec brings us and teaches us about the existence of the Universal Cosmic Fluid.

  1. Andre Luiz, in the book "Evolution in two worlds", chapter 1, subtitle "Cosmic Fluid", informs: “The cosmic fluid is the divine plasma, draught of the Creator... In that primordial element, constellations and suns, worlds and beings vibrate and live, like fish in the ocean”.

It is verified, like this, experimentally, the existence of the Universal Cosmic Fluid, scientifically denominated Bioenergy. A point of view at form, and not a point of view at thought.

  1. The existence of a Bioplasmatic or Energetic Field, in all living being, and equally in the inanimate matter.

The photographs, denominated of Photographs of the Bioplasmatic Field took the scientists, initially, to the conclusion that treated itself of a simple electric phenomenon. With the pursuance of the researches, they concluded that the simple electric phenomenon suffered a series of variants, such as:

  • It could be altered;
  • It could be disturbed;
  • It was guided;
  • It was controlled;
  • It could be annulled.

It was verified that such behaviors were due to:

  1. The existence of a Bioplasmatic Body.

In the announcement to the scientific community, it was exposed that, "The man is much more than a machine, and the Kirlian photography demonstrates more dimensions than we supposed". All of the living things possess not only a physical body, constituted of atoms and molecules, but also, an equivalent energy body:

  • Perispirit – Bioplasmatic Body.
  • Irradiation of the perispirit – Bioplasmatic Field.

As we studied, in one of the properties of the perispirit, the one of irradiation, Kardec informs us, as "the perispirit forms surround to the physical body an atmosphere..." Let us see well, atmosphere - field. Scientific proof, obtained experimentally. A point of view at form and not a point of view at thought.

It was demonstrated, experimentally, that the Bioplasmatic Field or Bioenergetic varies from person to person, depending on physiologic, emotional, psychological, and mental factors, etc.

  1. The Transmission of Energy (Fluids)

The researches evidenced that "the psychic cure involves a transmission of energy of the healer’s bioplasmatic body to the patient’s bioplasmatic body. The changes happened in that level finally are reflected on the physical body, and cure it, according to it is affirmed."

2. Classification.

We can classify perispirit in the following way:

  • Function;
  • Form;
  • Organization;
  • Properties.

Function

  1. The perispirit envelops the spirit when disincarnated, giving form to the characteristic of the Spirit. Thus, if spirit is good, its perispiritual form will be luminous. If we see an obscure perispirit, we could say that over there is an undeveloped spirit;
  2. The perispirit gives form to the characteristics of Spirit, in the same way that the pulp of the fruit contemplates in its form the characteristics of the seed;
  3. It serves as intermediary between the Spirit and the body, participating simultaneously of the two. It participates simultaneously because it is a matter still. It is still a body of matter although of fluid matter - a matter already well spiritualized;
  4. It participates in the reincarnation;
  5. It participates in the disincarnation;
  6. It participates in evolution;
  7. It participates in the mediumship;
  8. It participates in the process of the pass;

Form

  • According to the purity of the spirit, it can assume any form that the spirit may choose to give to it.

Organization

  • We know that the spirits draw fluidic and semi-material envelope from Universal Cosmic Fluid of each globe, where it goes to clothe and to give form to the matter. Therefore the perispirit organize itself with the peculiar fluid to the world, which it lives.

Properties

  1. Penetrability;
  2. Elasticity;
  3. Irradiation;
  4. Tangibility;
  5. Plasticity;
  6. Absorption;
  7. Bi-corporeality;
  8. Emancipation.

In the pass: The pass giver can, through a powerful will and of the earnest prayer, to agglutinate and combine fluids, these fluids will operate through of the perispirit, that will transform and reactivate the fluids that will be transferred in the tasks of the pass, theses fluids reach the patient’s perispirit, and through this, also the patient’s body.

Conclusion.

Perispirit is a fluidic organism; it is the preexistent and surviving form of the human being, on which is modeled the corporeal envelope, like a double and invisible garment, it is constituted of quintessentialized matter. It is one of the most important products of the Universal Cosmic Fluid; it is a condensation of this fluid around a focus of intelligence. It is indestructible, however it is not unalterable; it is purified and it becomes ennobling with the conquests of the spirit. The Spirit and perispirit form an inseparable whole, constituting, in the group the active and passive parts, in other words, the two faces of the thinking principle, being the perispirit the neutral and passive part.

Perispirit is constituted by very special Centers of Force. It irradiates specific vibrations, and that they are carrier of own load that permit a perfect tuning with similar energies, establishing areas of attraction and repulsion with the emitted waves.

Closing the Concept.

Perispirit is, therefore, the organ of transmission of all of the sensations and desires. When the act is Spirit’s initiative, we can say that: Spirit thinks, the perispirit transmits, and the body obeys. When the order is external, we can say that: The body wants, the perispirit transmits, and the Spirit receives.

Names for which the perispirit is known in different places and times.

Kha – Linga Sharira – Aeriform body – Nephesh – Ochema – Eidolon – Kama – Rupa – Pneuma – Ferouer – Spiritual body or Incorruptible body – Fluidic body – Plastic mediator – Rouach – Khi – Boadhas – Imago – Vital body – Physical influx – Enormon – Subtle flesh of the soul – Evestrum – Astroideh – Igneous body – Arqueus – Odica light – Mano – Maya – Kosha.
